A versatile method for the preparation of indolizidine alkaloids from 1-ben zyloxy-5-(p-toluenesulfonamido)-3-alken-2-ols as stereodefined key intermed iates has been developed. The utility of this approach was demonstrated by the synthesis of (+)-monomorine I.
