The concentration of sulfur in the silicate Earth is estimated based on qua
ntitative models for the generation of basalts of the NMORN type in the cou
rse of the polybaric dynamic melting of a pyrolite source. Additional infor
mation is obtained by comparing the concentrations of chalcophile metals in
mantle peridotites and basalts with the behavior of these elements during
the partial melting of sulfide-bearing peridotite. The sulfur concentration
in the Earth's mantle is estimated at 300 ppm.
