The densification behavior of U3O8 powder compacts has been investigated in
a reducing atmosphere by dilatometry. The U3O8 compact shrank due to the r
eduction of U3O8 to UO2 and then densified above 1200 degrees C. The U3O8 c
ompact containing simulated fission products densified more than the U3O8 c
ompact. The addition of Nb2O5 enhanced significantly the densification rate
s of both compacts over the temperature range between 1200 degrees C and 16
00 degrees C. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
