NEUES JAHRBUCH FUR GEOLOGIE UND PALAONTOLOGIE-ABHANDLUNGEN
The three members of the more than 900 m thick Qal'eh Dokhtar Formation rep
resent delta front, siliciclastic ramp, and carbonate platform slope enviro
nments respectively. Sedimentation took place either in form of thickening-
upward (shallowing) hemicycles or, in the case of the carbonate platform sl
ope deposits, as thinning and fining-upward hemicycles recording cyclic cha
nges in the accommodation space on the platform. Ammonites indicate a Middl
e Callovian to Oxfordian age, but the base of the formation possibly reache
d down to the lower Middle Jurassic. The consequences of these results for
the correlation of Middle Jurassic strata of east-central Iran are briefly
discussed.
