Abstract
Low energy ion scattering in the surface blocking and in the neutral impact collision ion scattering spectrometry (NICISS) mode is used to study the t hermal behaviour of the Ag(1 1 0) surface in the temperature range from 300 K to about 900 K. In particular, the NICISS data collected along the [1(1) over bar 0] direction at surface temperature above 550 K, once compared wi th the results of molecular dynamics (MD) calculations, allow to establish the close connection between the anharmonicity of the surface vibrations an d the vacancy presence. Below 550 K, the atom vibrations are described by a Debye temperature of 163 +/- 15 K. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All righ ts reserved.
