This paper indicates that the mean time to failure (MTTF) is an important p
erformance indicator of vibration fragility in addition to the natural freq
uency. After systematically introducing the accelerated vibration test meth
od for fruit transportation, a Weibull theory-based MTTF curve is introduce
d, which can correlate the laboratory vibration test, and actual transporta
tion in particular for complicated products, such as electronics items in w
hich the failure appears less consistently than in fruit. Finally, it is su
ggested that a MTTF curve is needed before designing the packaging for the
product and carrying out the vibration test. Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley
