Abstract
This article examines the well known practice in pre-colonial Africa o f the pawning of humans. This also found in Asia, should be distinguis hed from slavery despite its similar characteristics. The author enume rates relevant principles and establishes concrete boundaries. A numbe r of misunderstandings are thus elucidated and the concept is clearly explained.
