Abstract
Notched cantilever beams of snow were broken under their own weight to dete rmine the fracture toughness of snow with densities between 100 kg m(-3) an d 540 kg m(-3). It varies with the relative density according to K-Ic = 7.8 4 (rho(snow)/rho(ice))(2.3) kPa m(1/2). Snow in tension is one of the most brittle materials known to man.
