Abstract
The effect of the partial substitution of Mn with Fe in the layered perovsk ites (x less than or equal to 0.2) La1.4Ca1.6Mn2-xFexO7 has been studied. T he results show that conduction and ferromagnetism have been consistently s uppressed by Fe doping. The colossal magnetoresistance is enhanced by Fe do ping in some cases. The formation of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic cl usters originating from the random substitutions of Mn3+ by Fe3+ ions has b een suggested to explain the experimental results.
