Abstract
We describe a simple and effective procedure to estimate hydrogen-impact io nization cross sections over the energy range of tens of keV/nucleon to ten s of MeV/nucleon. The procedure is valid in the first Born approximation us ing known or estimated electron-impact cross sections. The original Bates-G riffing relation between the two sets of cross sections is reformulated and a correction factor due to multiple transitions is introduced. Sample calc ulated ionization cross sections for helium and carbon collisions with hydr ogen are presented.
