The crystal structure of [C(NH2)(3)](2)[Nd(dtpa) (H2O)] . 7H(2)O (H(5)dtpa=
diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) has been determined. Electronic absorp
tion spectra of a single crystal of the [C(NH2)(3)](2)[Nd(dtpa) (H2O)] . 7H
(2)O compound were measured at room and liquid helium temperatures. In orde
r to investigate the formation and structure of Nd-III-dtpa species occurri
ng in solution, the spectral results for the crystal were compared with tho
se of the Nd-III-dtpa (1:1) complex in solution. The analysis of spectral p
roperties of this system may be applied for solutions of coordination chemi
stry problems encountered in lanthanide polyaminopolycarboxylates. (C) 2000
