Abstract
In the United States, any institution that makes it to 100 years of age can
celebrate a rare longevity. For a general medical textbook to be continuou
sly published for 100 years is unique. In 1999, The Merck Manual celebrated
its centenary with the publication of the seventeenth edition, making it t
he longest continuously published general medical textbook in the English l
anguage.
