Abstract
In the paper, necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for a soluti on of the linear transport equation to have exponential asymptotics of the form phi(t, x, v) exp(lambda(0)t){c phi(x, v) + O(e-(epsilon t))} as t --> infinity. Sufficient conditions on the coefficients of the transport equati ons are obtained ensuring exponential asymptotics.
