Abstract
Starting from the principle of virtual displacements, a plate theory is for mulated which includes most classical and refined plate theories as special cases. The force and moment equilibrium and the correct formulation of the boundary conditions is obtained by introducing a certain virtual displacem ent field, and it is shown that generalized Kirchhoff edge forces are prese nt in some types of higher-order theories.
