A novel, sensitive, selective and reproducible nitric oxide (NO) microsenso
r is developed for direct measurement of NO in vitro and in vivo. Using the
microsensor, the first direct measurements NO release from the rat hippoca
mpus are made. NO levels are increased by stimulated with L-arginine and ac
etylcholine. L-N-omega-nitro-arginine, a NO synthase inhibitor, decreases t
he NO increase induced by L-arginine and acetylcholine. The effect of sodiu
m nitroprusside, a NO donor, is also performed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B
