Differentiating three areas within each of the two basic temperament dimens
ions make it possible to propose a model of nine temperament types. The mod
el includes four traditional types and five mixed ones. We analyzed data fr
om a sample of 1405 Czech adolescents aged 15 to 17 who completed Cattell's
personality questionnaire HSPQ and Cap's questionnaire of parenting style
in family. We found agreement as well as marked differences in the parentin
g style in relationship to the individual temperament types of boys and gir
ls. For both sexes, the dimensions anxious-stable and social extravert-intr
overt relate to the parenting style in the family in a different way. The d
ifferences in the parenting style of boys and girls and their relation to t
he temperament of these adolescents can be hypothetically interpreted in co
nnection with differences in masculine and feminine roles. The results brin
g suggestions for further research on the relationship between temperament
and parenting styles as well as implications for practical applications, pr
imarily in the areas of education and counseling, concerning boys and girls
belonging to different temperament types.
