Construction of extended affine Lie algebras by the twisting process

We first give a characterization of the core (modulo its center) of an exte nded affine Lie algebra and then use this characterization to show that as in the case of affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras, many of the known examples of EALAs can be constructed from standard examples by a process known as "twi sting".
