In the past two decades, remarkable advances have occurred in the treatment
of cutaneous fungal diseases. New generations of antifungal drugs have alt
ered the therapeutic approaches to both systemic and superficial mycoses of
companion animals. To understand these advances and their impact in veteri
nary dermatology, traditional therapies and their clinical applications are
reviewed. The pharmacokinetics, methods of action, principal adverse effec
ts, and dermatologic uses of polyenes, iodides, and griseofulvin are summar
ized.
