This article reconstructs a tradition of Human Geography which can be trace
d back to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In order to give a fair account of th
is tradition a new concept of physiognomy is necessary. A.v.Humboldt, C.G.C
arus and Herbert Lehmann are discussed as main representatives of this trad
ition.
