A penalty function method has recently been developed which maintains low s
idelobes and prevents weight jitter in linearly-constrained minimum-varianc
e broadband adapted beam-patterns. As originally proposed the technique req
uires a unique weighting matrix to be computed for each look-direction. A s
implified version is described which avoids this limitation by pre-steering
the sensor signals to reduce the problem to that of the broadside case. Ex
tension of the proposed method to cater for arrays which spatially undersam
ple the impinging signal wavefronts is also illustrated. Results for both s
imulated and real data are presented which illustrate the improvement in ar
ray performance that can be obtained with the simplified algorithm.
