Al foils, which were folded around an axis perpendicular to the curren
t direction and the applied magnetic field, reveal an anomalous contri
bution to the magnetoresistance superimposed on the intrinsic magnetor
esistance of the non folded foil. This contribution consists of a line
ar magnetoresistance term on only one side of the sample given by twic
e the Hall resistance and an additional correction on both sample side
s. By solving the transport problem of the folded geometry for an unco
mpensated simple metal (e.g. Al), the experimental result can be under
stood in detail in terms of current diversion near the fold in the sam
ple. The linear magnetoresistance term is also found within the Buttik
er edge-state transmission model for three-dimensional systems.
