Abstract
Two new ellagitannins, thonningianins A (1) and B (2), have been isolated f rom the African medicinal herb Thonningia sanguinea and their structures el ucidated by interpretation of spectroscopic data. Both 1 and 2 showed stron g free radical scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (D PPH) as shown by ESR analysis.
