Abstract
Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) is the most common type of arth ritis, and is a significant source of pain and disability. Osteoarthritis h as multiple risk factors, including some that are potentially modifiable, s uch as body weight. Increased body weight is associated with an increased r isk of developing osteoarthritis. Relatively minor weight loss can effectiv ely decrease the risk of the onset of osteoarthritis, and can decrease symp toms and progression in patients who already have osteoarthritis. Mechanism s of weight loss include an appropriate exercise program and adjustments in dietary intake. Additional considerations could include anorectic agents a nd gastric stapling.
