The present study investigates the germination requirements of the seeds of
Rumex hastatus with respect to temperature, light and substrate. Both fiel
d and laboratory studies indicate that temperature 27-28 degrees C, light a
nd soil condition are important factors governing germination of seeds prod
uced either in June or December. Unfavourable temperature regimes prevent w
inter seeds from germinating for seven months but favourable temperature en
ables summer seeds to germinate within a month after collection. Summer see
ds are at an advantage because seed viability declines with storage time.
