This paper describes a case of chronic primary splenic torsion in a female
Great Dane. Clinical signs had already been present for two weeks. A diagno
sis was obtained by radiography and ultrasound. A successful splenectomy wa
s performed and resulted in complete recovery of the animal. A literature r
eview is given of primary splenic torsion in the dog, including a discussio
n of the different manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment. Early diagnosi
s and treatment are the key to a good prognosis.
