Filamentous fungi play a considerable role in modern biotechnology due to t
heir metabolic versatility, ability to excrete high concentrations of extra
cellular protein but also because of their damage done to important crop pl
ants. This article highlights the current stage of recombinant technology o
f filamentous fungi, thereby particularly emphasizing (a) progress in gene
cloning and transformation, (b) gene regulation, (c) molecular biotechnolog
y, and (d) the status of genome sequencing projects.
