Abstract
This paper responds to Denver and Hands' critique of our approach to t he study of local campaign effects at British general elections. We pr ovide both substantive and technical rationales for our approach, and illustrate its use with recent data. The Conservatives may to some ext ent be a 'special case', but we have strong evidence of differences be tween incumbents and challengers, whatever the party. (C) 1997 Elsevie r Science Ltd.
