Abstract
Proteins strongly synthesized in Corynebacterium glutamicum during nitrogen restriction were examined by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and micro sequencing. Two main groups of enzymes were identified beside miscellaneous proteins, enzymes involved (i) in protein synthesis. and (ii) in carbon me tabolism. Biochemical measurements revealed an increase of oxygen consumpti on during nitrogen starvation, indicating an enhanced energy demand of the cells. By Northern hybridizations, an increased transcription for the gap a nd fda genes upon nitrogen deprivation was shown. (C) 2000 Federation of Eu ropean Microbiological Societies.
