Abstract
The article summarises the principle methods currently in use for supportin g chemical content on Web pages, and introduces the new <object> element wh ich is part of the HTML4 and XHTML specifications. Despite claiming support for HTML 4, several recently released browsers do not correctly support th is element. The role of XML-based markup languages is briefly introduced in the conclusions.
