The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of the two detectors proposed for th
e Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Recently, the CMS Tracker Collaboration ha
s finalized the design of the CMS inner tracking detector. After characteri
zing the detector layout, we review the algorithms developed for track and
vertex reconstruction. We discuss the reconstruction capability for several
benchmark event topologies and assess the projected performance of the CMS
