We propose a compact and reliable temperature-compensating package for nega
tive-strain-coefficient long-period fiber gratings written in standard opti
cal fiber. Gratings which are 3 cm long are packed into aluminum, copper an
d plexiglas tubes, respectively, under tension. The mounted gratings exhibi
t lower temperature sensitivity (about 2.0 nm/ 100 degrees C), compared wit
h uncompensated gratings (about 5.5 nm/100 degrees C). The compensating res
ults are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, (C) 2000 Elsevier
