We have investigated the elastic properties of polycrystalline neon films w
hich were quench-condensed on a high-e silicon double-paddle oscillator. On
annealing the sound velocity of the neon film was found to decrease irreve
rsibly. The internal friction could be significantly reduced by annealing.
It showed at all annealing stages only little variation with temperature be
tween 40 mK and 2 K but increased very strongly above 3 K. (C) 2000 Elsevie
