We have used an acoustic technique to study the critical behavior of neon c
onfined in a 95% porosity silica aerogel grown in the 10 mu m channels of a
glass capillary array. Shear and longitudinal ultrasonic waves showed larg
e velocity dips and attenuation peaks due to the diverging compressibility
near the critical point. Confinement in the aerogel lowers the critical tem
perature slightly and appears to narrow the coexistence region. (C) 2000 El
