The B-2u phonon mode of YBa2Cu3O6+y. which is sensitive to the singlet-pair
formation (or the pseudo-gap formation) has been studied by neutron inelas
tic scattering. For the optimally hole-doped system, the observed change of
the temperature (T) dependence of the phonon energy with a small amount of
Zn substitution for Cu suggests that in contrast to the non-substituted sy
stem the pseudo-gap formation begin to develop with decreasing T at a tempe
rature much higher than T-c similar to the underdoped case. (C) 2000 Elsevi
