We explore a mechanism for generating the Yukawa hierarchies by displacing
the left- and right-handed components of the standard model fermions in a h
igher-dimensional space. We find a unique configuration of displacements wh
ich fits all quark and lepton masses and mixing angles, with a prediction f
or the strange quark mass m(s)(<(MS)over bar>)(2 GeV) approximate to (1.19)
x(VubVcb/V-us)(1/2)x m(b)(<(MS)over bar>)(m(b)) approximate to 120 MeV.
