Single pion transitions of S wave to S wave, P wave to S wave and P wave to
P wave heavy baryons are analyzed in the framework of the heavy quark symm
etry (HQS) limit. We then use a constituent quark model picture for the lig
ht diquark system with an underlying SU(2N(f))xO(3) symmetry to reduce the
number of the HQS coupling factor required to describe these transitions. A
single constituent quark model p-wave coupling is necessary to describe tr
ansitions among the S wave ground states. One s-wave and one d-wave couplin
g factors are required to determine each of the transitions from the orbita
lly symmetric K multiplet and from the orbitally antisymmetric k multiplet
down to the ground state. P wave to P wave single pion transitions are desc
ribed by altogether eight constituent quark model coupling constants. We al
so estimate decay rates of some single pion transitions between charm baryo
n states.
