Cw. Wu et al., PROGNOSTIC INDICATORS FOR SURVIVAL AFTER CURATIVE RESECTION FOR PATIENTS WITH CARCINOMA OF THE STOMACH, Digestive diseases and sciences, 42(6), 1997, pp. 1265-1269
This study aims to determine prognostic indicators among patient-, tum
or-, and treatment-related factors of gastric cancer patients. A total
of 510 patients who underwent curative gastric resection were studied
, Univariate analysis of patient-related factors showed a significantl
y lower survival in patients with a history of obstruction, hypoalbumi
nemia, and anemia, Tumor-related factors including gross appearance, l
ocation, and size of tumor; depth of cancer invasion; level, number, a
nd frequency of lymph node metastasis; stromal reaction and tumor grow
th pattern; and histological classification all significantly affected
survival, Surgical treatment related factors such as total or distal
subtotal gastrectomy, extent of lymphadenectomy, and combined resectio
n of adjacent organ(s) showed a statistically significant adverse infl
uence on survival. Multivariate analysis identified only four tumor-re
lated factors-number of metastatic lymph nodes, depth of cancer invasi
on, stromal reaction, and gross appearance of the tumor-as independent
ly affecting survival. These findings suggest that only four tumor-rel
ated factors were prognostic indicators in patients with gastric cance
r.
