Tectonic study of a passive margin necessitates distinction between st
ructures linked to the initial stretching of the crust and gravitation
al structures; In the Gulf of Lions, initial extension in the Oligocen
e to Early Aquitanian has produced an asymmetric system of horsts and
grabens. Major faults, plunging southeast, are inherited from Late-Her
cynian or Mesozoic faults and from Eocene thrusts. Gravitational struc
tures are either early structures following the rifting event or late
structures linked to thermal subsidence.
