Bh. Gottlieb et J. Johnson, Respite programs for caregivers of persons with dementia: a review with practice implications, AGING MENT, 4(2), 2000, pp. 119-129
This paper critically reviews evidence concerning the role and impact of ce
nter-based respite programs for the family caregivers of persons with demen
tia. It examines the timing, intensity and duration of day program utilizat
ion, the expectations the caregivers bring to these programs, and the impac
ts that derive from program participation, drawing on this information to p
ropose ways of optimizing the role played by this component of the communit
y's long-term system of care.
