Abstract
The performance of a beam splitter based on the atomic Kapitza-Dirac effect can be essentially improved by concentrating the atoms close to the period ically spaced, approximately linear sections of the optical potential. This can be easily achieved with a second, identical phase grating, which plays the role of an atomic array illuminator.
