Multi-wall carbon nanotubes were intercalated by bromine. The brominated ca
rbon nanotubes were investigated using high resolution transmission electro
n microscopy. The accumulation of bromine on carbon nanotubes shows an unus
ual ordered accumulation along the direction perpendicular to the carbon na
notube's surface. As a result, the area on which bromine accumulates was mo
re readily oxidized compared to normal carbon nanotubes. (C) 2000 Elsevier
