In Alzheimer disease, therapies to improve the core symptoms and perhaps ev
en slow disease progression include cholinesterase inhibitors, receptor ago
nists, antiinflammatory drugs, and antioxidants. Neuroleptics, antiepilepti
cs, and nondrug approaches are used to control and relieve complications su
ch as delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, and agitated behavior. We outlin
e a practical approach to the use of these therapies.
