This paper develops the concept of associative memory based on a secon
d-order hologram-a nonlinearly recorded hologram quadratic in the expo
sure of the amplitude-response component. The heteroassociative and ph
ase-reflective properties of such a hologram are discussed, as well as
the property of correcting errors of the information recorded on it.
A generalization is given for the case of an arbitrarily polarized obj
ect wave. The relationship is discussed between associative memory bas
ed on a second-order hologram and other methods of nonlinear holograph
ic associative memory based on cavity architectures and a double phase
-conjugating mirror. (C) 1997 The Optical Society of America.
