This paper presents r- and hr-adaptive boundary element methods. The error
analysis is done by the sample point error estimation scheme. Then, the err
or indicator is defined as the product of the computational errors and the
fundamental solutions. Mesh refinement is carried out so that the error ind
icator distributes almost uniformly on whole boundary elements at the refin
ed mesh. The present method is applied to the two-dimensional elastic probl
em in order to confirm its validity. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rig
