Ja. Campbell et al., A new species of fringe-limbed treefrog (Hylidae) from the Sierra Los Cuchumatanes of northwestern Guatemala, HERPETOLOGI, 56(2), 2000, pp. 250-256
We describe a new species of treefrog from the cloud forest of die Sierra d
e Los Cuchumatanes of northeastern Guatemala. This frog is a member of the
fringe-linked group of hylids and may be distinguished most easily from oth
er members of the group by the poorly developed dermal fringe along the low
er outer edge of the forearm anti a mere trace of a Fringe on the tarsus. T
his new species also is characterized by its large size (84.1 mm SVL) finge
rs that are two-thirds webbed, nearly fully webbed feet, and lack of integu
mentary-cranial co-ossification. This new species most closely resembles Hy
la echinata, which occurs to the west of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the
Sierra de Juarez of Oaxaca and which is the probable sister-species.
