Gk. Kelso et al., Pollen record preservation processes in the Salem Neck sewage plant shell midden (19-ES-471), Salem, Massachusetts, USA, J ARCH SCI, 27(3), 2000, pp. 235-240
The pollen spectra of sediment inside shell valves were recovered concave-s
ide-down at the Salem Neck Sewage Plant Shell Midden in Salem, Massachusett
s, U.S.A., were compared with those of unprotected midden matrix. The data
indicates that shells will preserve prehistoric pollen spectra from the per
colating rainwater, free oxygen, and aerobic fungi that move and destroy po
llen in archaeological sites that are exposed at the surface to the natural
elements.
