Transcatheter occlusion of atrial septal defects (ASD) is currently being i
nvestigated as an attractive alternative to surgical correction. Thromboemb
olic events are rare in both techniques, However, we report a case of massi
ve systemic embolization and residual left atrial thrombus after secundum A
SD transcatheter closure by the ASDOS device (Atrial Septal Defect Occlusio
n System, Dr. Ing Osypka Corporation, Germany), The patient was successfull
y treated by femoral embolectomies, surgical removal of the device and clos
ure of the ASD without a patch, No thrombophilia was found on subsequent ex
ploration, Transcatheter ASD closure with the ASDOS device may therefore ex
pose the patient to severe embolic complications. Further evaluation is nee
ded before this technique can be safely recommended.
