Abstract
A theory of the antiferro-quadrupolar (AFQ) ordering is developed for a wea k-crystal-field system TmTe. Based on a classical description of multipoles we show how the magnetic-field anisotropy of AFQ transition temperature is related with the order-parameter symmetry and the type of crystal held. Th e correlations between spontaneous and field-induced magnetic orders are di scussed in connection with the stability of the AFQ state. (C) 2000 Elsevie r Science B.V. All rights reserved.
