The mobility of carriers in a one-dimensional electron system over liquid h
elium has been measured at the temperature 0.5-1.7 K and for different valu
es of linear electron density. Profiled nylon substrates with some quantity
of charge deposited were used for the realization of a one-dimensional ele
ctron system. It is shown that electron mobility is dependent on the quanti
ty of the charge on a substrate. Effects observed are explained by the loca
lization of electrons moving in the random potential created by the substra
tes charge. It is supposed that at low temperatures the movement of carrier
s is determined by quantum effects. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All righ
