Hot electrons and sub- and supersonic flows of cold ions around a charged d
ust particle create steady state wake and Debye screening fields. These lin
ear, electrostatic fields are studied in two-dimensional planar or cylindri
cal geometry. An asymptotic analysis in the limit of large (compared to Deb
ye length) downstream coordinate z yields analytic wakefields that are in g
ood agreement with numerical integrations of the linear, steady state respo
nse function. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S1070-664X(00)01406-
